Boeing CEO David Calhoun will step down from the embattled plane maker at the end of the year as part of a broad management shakeup Monday after a series of mishaps at one of America's iconic manufacturers. Stephanie Pope, the company's chief operating officer for less than three months, has taken over leadership of the key division. Boeing has been under intense pressure since early January, when a panel blew off a brand-new Alaska Airlines 737 Max. Airline executives have expressed their frustration with the company, and even minor incidents involving Boeing jets have attracted extra attention. Pope, 51, was promoted to Boeing chief operating officer only in January.

New York CNN —Boeing CEO Dave Calhoun said Monday he intends to leave the beleaguered company by the end of the year in a major shakeup of the company’s leadership. The company also announced that Stan Deal, CEO of Boeing Commercial Airplanes, is retiring. The problems have led to multiple groundings for safety issues and more than $31 billion in cumulative losses. But it comes in the face of widespread criticism of the company by CEOs of many of the world’s major airlines Boeing depends upon to buy its planes. Any Boeing customer shifting to Airbus could find itself waiting until 2030 or beyond to get its planes delivered.

London CNN —Ryanair may be forced to cut flights and raise fares in the peak summer season this year because crisis-hit Boeing can’t deliver the planes it promised. Until recently, Ryanair was expecting Boeing to deliver 57 Max 8-200 planes by the end of April, Reuters reported O’Leary as saying. “We don’t really know how many aircraft we’re going to get from Boeing,” he said, according to Reuters. If only 40 aircraft are delivered, Ryanair may have to “announce some minor schedule cuts” by the end of March, O’Leary was reported as saying. I think we (will) get some modest compensation out of Boeing,” O’Leary said.

London CNN —Tim Clark, the president of Emirates, has joined a chorus of airline executives in warning that Boeing is running out of time to restore its reputation following a series of safety and manufacturing blunders. I’m sure Dave Calhoun and Stan Deal are on that,” he added, referring to Boeing’s CEO and head of commercial airplanes respectively. Clark isn’t the first airline boss to criticize Boeing since part of the fuselage of a 737 Max 9 blew out mid-flight in early January. Clark said that for the first time Emirates would send its own engineers to observe the production process of the 777 at Boeing and its supplier Spirit AeroSystems. “The fact that we’re having to do that is testament to what has happened,” he told the Financial Times.

“I have a lot of confidence both personally and professionally in David Calhoun and in Brian West,” Ryanair’s Michael O’Leary said Monday, referring to Boeing’s CEO and chief financial officer respectively. Calhoun — who was appointed to the top job in January 2020 as Boeing was already struggling with quality and safety issues — will unveil the planemaker’s full-year results Wednesday. Ryanair CEO Michael O'Leary, left, voiced strong support for Boeing CEO David Calhoun Monday. Partly because of this, Ryanair expects full-year profit for the current financial year to be at the lower end of a range of €1.85 billion-€1.95 billion ($2 billion-$2.1 billion) — trimming a November forecast of up to €2.05 billion ($2.2 billion). That would still be up from its previous record of €1.45 billion ($1.6 billion) earned in 2018, before the Covid-19 pandemic.

Ryanair has returned money to investors in the past, but never on a regular basis. Between 2008 and 2020, the group paid out €6.74 billion ($7.2 billion) to shareholders via buybacks and ad hoc dividend payments, according to a spokesperson. Less competition has allowed the airline to increase ticket prices, which soared 24% on average, offsetting significantly higher fuel costs. That would be up from its previous record of €1.45 billion ($1.6 billion) earned in 2018, before the Covid-19 pandemic. Ryanair agreed to buy up to 300 Boeing 737-10 planes earlier this year in a deal worth $40 billion.

In its opening weekend, the pop singer’s concert film, “Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour,” raked in between $95 and $97 million in the box office in the United States and Canada, movie theater chain AMC said Sunday. “I thought I had seen everything with the Barbenheimer phenomenon,” said Paul Dergarabedian, senior media analyst at Comscore, which tracks box office numbers. Boeing delivery delays disrupt Ryanair flights again

However, production delays at the Spirit Fuselage facility in Wichita, Kansas, combined with Boeing’s repair and delivery delays in Seattle, meant the budget airline now expects to receive only 14 aircraft between October and December. “At this early date, we do not expect these delivery delays will materially affect our full-year traffic target of 183.5 million [passengers],” Ryanair chief executive Michael O’Leary said. Asked if it could confirm the delays and when deliveries would be up to date, a spokesperson for Boeing said that the planemaker valued its partnership with Ryanair and was committed to supporting the airline. Ryanair already trimmed its full-year passenger forecast from 185 million in July, citing potential Boeing delays, as well as the impact of air traffic control strikes. Ryanair executives had said deliveries had “significantly improved” before Boeing discovered a production flaw last month that has slowed deliveries of its best-selling 737 MAX aircraft.

New York CNN —Taylor Swift’s fans know the greatest films of all time were never made, but that could be called into question come October 13, when her Eras Tour concert movie is set for release in North America. Experts say that choosing movie theaters for the Eras Tour film’s debut over the small screen is a move fitting of both Swift’s business acumen and relationship with her fans. Unlike her previous concerts, the Eras Tour has become a cultural phenomenon. Others seemed to have their own reasons for concern about the Eras Tour film release’s timing. The “Exorcist: Believer,” originally scheduled to be released on the same day as Swift’s film, moved it up a week.

CNN —International airlines have reported significant profits this year, boosted by strong demand for leisure travel – and events, such as the World Cup, which gave Qatar Airlines an enormous lift. On Thursday, International Airlines Group, which includes Aer Lingus and British Airways, announced a record profit of about $1.4 billion for the first half of the year. “Customer demand remains strong across the Group, particularly for leisure travel, with around 80% of passenger revenue for the third quarter already booked. Qatar Airways reported a $1.2 billion profit for the past fiscal year, ascribing its strong performance to December’s FIFA World Cup. In its report, Qatar Airways said that, throughout the 2022 World Cup, the company operated around 140,000 flights to bring more than 1.4 million people to Qatar.

London CNN —The travel industry has defied a global economic slowdown, enjoying record bookings and profits as pent-up demand following the pandemic fueled spending on air tickets and hotels. Ryanair (RYAAY), Europe’s largest airline by passenger numbers, warned Monday that high inflation and rising interest rates could dent appetite for air travel in the second half of the year. The airline now expects to carry 183.5 million passengers in the 12 months ending in March 2024. The Dublin-based airline — which on Friday announced plans to return to Ukraine within weeks of the war ending — forecast “modest” profit growth for the full year. The latest figure marks a significant turnaround for the aviation industry, which suffered net losses of $183 billion between 2020 and 2022 as pandemic lockdowns hit travel.

Timothy Richards, chief executive of Vue International, Europe’s largest privately owned movie theater operator, said in a statement Sunday that it had seen its biggest weekend in four years for ticket sales. AMC (AMC), the world’s largest movie theater chain, said last week that 60,000 people had bought tickets see both films on the same day. London CNN —Ryanair is planning to connect major airports in Ukraine to almost two dozen European capitals within weeks of the country’s airspace reopening when the war ends. Ryanair (RYAAY) said in a statement Thursday it would offer flights to and from Ukraine within eight weeks of that happening. Speaking from Kyiv, Ryanair CEO Michael O’Leary said the carrier would “charge back” into Ukraine after the war. “The visit of Ryanair senior management to Boryspil Airport is a powerful signal that the largest airline in Europe sees huge potential in the Ukrainian air transport market,” said Boryspil International Airport CEO Oleksiy Dubrevskyy. The “Barbenheimer” craze, which has swelled in popularity over the last few weeks, is all but set to propel the box office to its best weekend in years. BoxOffice Pro, a publication that tracks box office performance, said this week it is projecting a $200+ million weekend at the cinema. The battle of the bombshells playing out in theaters is not the usual runaway box office success story. “But it’s not just about the first three days of the box office either. The irony in the films’ massive draw is that, typically, studios prefer to avoid releasing major box office features on the same weekend as another.

The planes, the largest of Boeing’s (BA) 737 Max aircraft, will be delivered between 2027 and 2033. At a news conference Tuesday, O’Leary said Boeing had made significant progress in catching up, according to Reuters. On prices, the Ryanair CEO said: “In our view it will never be cheap enough and in Boeing’s view it is always far too cheap.”Boeing CEO Dave Calhoun, meanwhile, praised the deal. Ryanair is one of Boeing’s largest customers, with more than 600 planes in its fleet or on order, according to its website.

PARIS, May 8 (Reuters) - Ryanair (RYA.I) is close to signing a major new aircraft order with Boeing (BA.N), two people familiar with the matter said on Monday. The multi-billion-dollar deal for a three-digit quantity of 737 MAX jets could be announced as early as Tuesday, they added, asking not to be named. Boeing and Ryanair declined to comment. Europe's largest budget carrier halted negotiations for at least 100 Boeing 737 MAX jets plus as many options in a pricing dispute some 18 months ago. He said Ryanair was now considering the 200-seat 737 MAX 8200 and the 230-seat 737 MAX 10.
